Psychiatric Care FAQs

What happens at a first psychiatric evaluation?

Your first visit includes a detailed conversation about your symptoms, history, current medications, and goals for treatment. We use this information to reach a diagnosis and discuss treatment options, which may include medication, lifestyle changes, or referral to therapy.

Can a nurse practitioner prescribe psychiatric medication?

Yes. As a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner licensed in California, we can prescribe and manage psychiatric medications, including starting new medications, adjusting existing regimens, and monitoring for side effects at scheduled follow-up visits so your treatment plan stays on track over time.

Do you provide psychotherapy?

Our psychiatric visits focus on evaluation and medication management rather than ongoing weekly psychotherapy sessions. When psychotherapy would help, we discuss this during your visit and can coordinate care with a therapist you are already seeing, or help you find one, alongside your medication management. In the meantime, we can provide short-term supportive therapy to help bridge the gap while you look for a longer-term therapist.

How long until psychiatric medication starts working?

Timelines vary by medication and condition; some effects are noticeable within days, while others take several weeks to reach their full benefit. We schedule follow-up visits during this period to track how you are responding and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. You can also reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, available 24/7.
